Boardwalk restrooms, most of them seasonal

Coney Island's public restrooms are mostly comfort stations on and beside the Riegelmann Boardwalk, run by NYC Parks for the beach, with a few more in the neighborhood's parks and playgrounds. The map opens on half a mile around the Wonder Wheel, a ten minute walk, which covers the amusement area and the boardwalk from Asser Levy Park to beyond the Steeplechase Pier: 10 restroom places (a facility mapped as several points counts once), 9 recorded as open to the public and 9 as free.

Outside the summer, check before you walk. The City of New York's restroom list marks most of the beach restrooms as seasonal and gives no dates, and our data does not record seasons at all, so a restroom on the map may be one that is shut for the winter. The year-round ones on the city's list are below.

What the city's list says, seasonal and year round

The city's list gives every NYC Parks restroom here as "8am-4pm, Open later seasonally". Within half a mile of the Wonder Wheel it marks as seasonal the beach restrooms it calls Zones 4b and 5b, the restrooms in Asser Levy Park, and the concession restrooms at the Steeplechase Park carousel ("11:00am - 10:00pm midnight on weekends") and the Abe Stark rink. It marks as year round:

  • Coney Island Beach Zone 5a, on the boardwalk a short walk west of the Wonder Wheel, fully accessible, with changing stations. Our data records it as open to the public, free and gender neutral, 8 AM to 4 PM daily, and it is the nearest restroom on the map.
  • Coney Island Library (Brooklyn Public Library) on Mermaid Avenue, a single-stall all-gender restroom, open during library hours: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10 AM to 6 PM, Tuesday 1 PM to 8 PM, Thursday 10 AM to 8 PM, Saturday 10 AM to 5 PM, closed Sunday.

Further along the boardwalk, beyond the half mile, the list has more seasonal beach restrooms to the west and year-round ones in Kaiser Park, Calvert Vaux Park and several playgrounds.

The list marks the Luna Playground restroom as not operational; our data records a public restroom at that spot, so treat it as closed until you see otherwise. Its rows were last updated in June 2025, and the city notes that availability "is subject to change due to maintenance needs, construction, or other factors".

Every restroom on the map, nearest first

10 places within half a mile of the Wonder Wheel. Distances are straight-line from the center of the area. Each row shows only what OpenStreetMap records for it, after cleaning: a row without hours or access details means the record has none we could show, not that the restroom is closed or locked. OpenStreetMap data from November 2026.

"Open now" and "Closed now" appear only where OpenStreetMap lists a restroom's opening hours: 1 place here, and 1.7% of the US restroom records we use. Those hours are added by volunteers and may be out of date, and "Hours not listed" means only that no hours are recorded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Coney Island boardwalk restrooms open all year?

Most are not. The City of New York's public restroom list marks the beach restrooms along the boardwalk as seasonal, except one, "Coney Island Beach Zone 5a", which it marks as open year round, "8am-4pm, Open later seasonally". The list gives no season dates, and NYC Parks' own beach pages could not be read when this page was written, so check before relying on a seasonal one outside the summer.

Can I use the restrooms in Luna Park?

Only with a ticket. Luna Park says "restrooms located within Luna Park are reserved for paying customers", with family restrooms by the Souvenir Store at West 10th Street and by the carousel at Kensington Walk.

Where is a restroom at Coney Island in winter?

Within half a mile of the Wonder Wheel, the city's list gives two as open year round: the beach restroom it calls Zone 5a, on the boardwalk a short walk west of the Wonder Wheel, "8am-4pm, Open later seasonally", and the Coney Island Library of the Brooklyn Public Library on Mermaid Avenue (closed Sundays). Its rows were last updated in June 2025.

How many public restrooms are at Coney Island?

Our map shows 10 restroom places within half a mile of the Wonder Wheel, 9 of them recorded as open to the public and 9 as free. Our data does not record which are seasonal; the city's list, quoted on this page, does.
