Understanding Test Scores
Test scores show the percentage of students who met or exceeded proficiency standards on their state's annual assessments. The two main subjects tested are English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics.
Important: Each state uses its own assessment system, so scores cannot be directly compared across state lines. A 60% proficiency rate in California is not equivalent to 60% in Texas, as the tests and standards differ.

School location data comes from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which maintains the official database of all US schools. Test score data is collected from each state's department of education, published annually under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) federal requirements.
The database currently covers 75,000+ public schools across 43 states and Washington DC, using each state's most recent published assessment results. Alaska, Maine, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming are not covered yet.
