"Where am I" tools have existed for years, and almost all of them make the same mistake: they show a pin and a set of coordinates with no hint of how good the underlying fix actually was. A position accurate to three kilometres gets printed with the same seven-decimal confidence as one accurate to three metres. This tool reports what your browser actually knows, not more.
Your browser's geolocation service returns three things: a latitude, a longitude, and an accuracy figure in metres describing how sure it is. That third number is the one everyone else discards. Here, it decides how many decimal places your coordinates get shown with, how large the circle on the map is, and what plain-words accuracy statement you see - "accurate to about 15 metres" or "accurate to about 3 km", not a false-precision number dressed up to look more confident than it is.
Before you click: why browser location drifts
Phone versus laptop. A phone usually carries a GPS chip, which can place you to within a few metres outdoors by timing satellite signals - no internet connection even required for the position fix itself. A laptop almost never has a GPS chip, so its browser instead estimates your position from the wifi networks it can see nearby, a method that typically lands somewhere between tens and a few thousand metres of accuracy, and can be far worse with few networks in range. This tool infers which method likely produced your result from the accuracy figure alone (the browser doesn't report the method directly) and says so in plain words next to your result.
Why a website can think you're in the wrong town. Most sites never ask your browser for its GPS or wifi position at all - they guess from your IP address instead, which only reveals roughly where your internet connection is routed from. That can be a real city away from where you're actually sitting, especially on mobile data or certain VPN and satellite connections, which is why a streaming service, a search engine, or a weather site can confidently get your town wrong while a tool that requests your browser's actual location gets far closer. Two different methods, both casually called "my location", with very different accuracy.
What the circle means, and why a smaller one isn't always available. The circle is not decoration: it's the honest range your position could genuinely fall within, given what your device could measure. A smaller circle requires either a GPS chip doing its job outdoors, or enough nearby wifi networks for a tighter wifi-based estimate - neither of which any website, including this one, can improve from the outside. When the circle is large, that's the fix being honestly uncertain, not this tool failing.

What happens if I say no to the location permission prompt?
The tool tells you plainly that it can't find you without permission, and offers the alternative straight away: click anywhere on the map to check that point instead. A manually placed point has no accuracy circle, since it isn't a measurement with a margin of error, it's simply the spot you chose.
Is my location sent to your server?
No. The pin and the accuracy circle come entirely from your own browser and never leave it. The one exception is turning your coordinates into a place name ("near Springfield, IL"), which is sent to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim to look up, triggered only when you click Use My Location or the map, never automatically and never repeated. If that lookup fails, the pin and circle are unaffected. The Copy Link button puts your coordinates into the URL itself so the link shows the same result when opened, which is not the same as sending them to a server: nobody sees them unless you choose to share that link.
A Note on Expectations
This page will not rank for "where am i" any time soon. That's the highest-volume query in this space, the incumbents are entrenched, and this domain is young. That's fine: this tool exists to round out the site's set of locator tools, to be a natural link target from the postcode and ZIP tools, and to answer the specific questions people actually search when a location result looks wrong, like "why is my location wrong" or "how accurate is browser location", which are lower volume, far less contested, and answered badly by incumbents who are usually the ones being wrong. Judge it on that, not on the head term.
