ZIP Code to Lat Long Converter
Convert US ZIP codes to latitude and longitude. Type one ZIP code to get its coordinates, city and state on a map, or paste or upload a list of up to 10,000 and download them all as a CSV. Each coordinate is the centre point of the ZIP code's area, not an address. Every lookup happens in your browser against our own copy of the free SimpleMaps ZIP code data.
How to Convert a ZIP Code to Lat Long
- Type a five-digit US ZIP code into the box above and press Convert.
- Read off the latitude and longitude in decimal degrees, or in degrees, minutes and seconds, with the ZIP code's city and state.
- Press Copy lat, long to paste the pair into a spreadsheet, a GPS app or a map.
Coordinates are given to five decimal places, about a metre, which is far finer than the point itself means: it is the centre of an area that can be anything from a few city blocks to hundreds of square miles.
Convert ZIP Codes to Latitude and Longitude in Bulk
Choose List or CSV to convert many ZIP codes at once. Paste them one per line, or as a comma-separated list, or upload a CSV file exported from Excel or Google Sheets. In a file with several columns the converter picks the column headed ZIP (or the one that holds the most ZIP codes) and lets you choose another. Up to 10,000 rows are converted in one go; if your list is longer, you are told how many were left and where the batch stopped.
The CSV you download has one row for every row you gave it, in the same order:
- zip, lat, lng, city, state for each ZIP code found
- note with the row number and the reason for any row that could not be converted (not a five-digit ZIP code, an empty cell, or a ZIP code not in the data), and a note where a leading zero was put back
Because the rows stay in order, you can paste the columns straight back next to the spreadsheet they came from. Click any converted row in the results to find it on the map.
What the Coordinates Are
Every ZIP code here has a single latitude and longitude from the free SimpleMaps US ZIP Code Database (Basic version 1.93, January 2026), which covers 33,782 ZIP codes in the 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico and the US territories. Each of them matches a US Census Bureau ZIP Code Tabulation Area, the Census's map of the ground each ZIP code covers, and the point is a centre for that area.
- Not an address. The point is not a house, a post office or the middle of town, and in a big rural ZIP code it can be miles from any given address.
- PO Box, unique and military ZIP codes are not included. ZIP codes used only for PO Boxes, given to one organization or building, or used for APO, FPO and DPO military mail cover no area of their own, so they are reported as not found instead of being given a made-up point.
- ZIP codes change. The Postal Service adds and retires ZIP codes; one created since the data was published will show as not found.
Your ZIP Codes Stay in Your Browser
The converter runs in your browser. The ZIP codes you type, paste or upload are not sent to MapTools or to anyone else, and a CSV file is read on your device, not uploaded. To look them up, your browser downloads our ZIP code data from maptools.co in small files, one per three-digit ZIP prefix (the first three digits), so those requests show which prefixes were needed rather than the ZIP codes. The map loads tiles for the area on screen from our own tile server, or from OpenFreeMap or OpenStreetMap if it is unavailable. Google Analytics and the adverts on this page record the visit and how many ZIP codes were converted, never the ZIP codes themselves.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a ZIP code to latitude and longitude?
Type the five-digit ZIP code into the box and press Convert. You get its latitude and longitude in decimal degrees (and in degrees, minutes and seconds), the city and state it belongs to, and a dot on the map. Copy lat, long puts the pair on your clipboard.
Can I convert a list of ZIP codes to lat long at once?
Yes. Choose List or CSV, then paste up to 10,000 ZIP codes, one per line, or upload a CSV file and check which column holds the ZIP codes. Every row gets a result, and a row that cannot be converted says why. Download the results as a CSV with zip, lat, lng, city, state and note columns, or copy them to the clipboard.
What do the coordinates point to?
Each ZIP code has one latitude and longitude: a centre point for the area the ZIP code covers, from the free SimpleMaps US ZIP Code Database. It is not the location of an address, a post office or a building, and in a large rural ZIP code it can be miles from a given address in it. Use it for mapping, distances and grouping by area, not for finding a door.
Why is my ZIP code not found?
The data holds 33,782 ZIP codes, the ones that cover an area on the ground (each matches a US Census Bureau ZIP Code Tabulation Area). ZIP codes used only for PO Boxes, ones given to a single organization or building (20500, the White House, is one), and military APO, FPO and DPO ZIP codes have no area of their own, so they are not in it and are reported as not found rather than given a guessed position. A new, retired or mistyped ZIP code is reported the same way.
My spreadsheet shows 2108 instead of 02108. Will that work?
Yes. Spreadsheets often store ZIP codes as numbers and drop the leading zero, so 02108 (Boston) becomes 2108. A three- or four-digit number is read as a ZIP code with its leading zeros put back, and that row says so in its note so you can check it. A ZIP+4 such as 33139-1234 is read as its first five digits.
Is anything I type sent anywhere?
The ZIP codes you type, paste or upload are not sent to MapTools or anyone else, and a CSV file is read in your browser, not uploaded. To look ZIP codes up, your browser downloads small data files from maptools.co, one for each three-digit ZIP prefix in your list (for 90210, the file for 902), so those requests show which prefixes were looked up, not the full ZIP codes. Map tiles for the area on screen come from our own tile server, or from OpenFreeMap or OpenStreetMap if it is unavailable. Google Analytics and the adverts on this page record the visit and the number of ZIP codes converted, not the ZIP codes.
Is the ZIP code converter free?
Yes. It is free, with no sign-up and no limit on how often you use it. Each batch is capped at 10,000 rows so it stays quick in the browser; for a longer file, split it and run each part, and the converter tells you where the first batch stopped.
