Choosing a School in Houston

The Houston metro sprawls across dozens of independent school districts, and which district your address falls in matters more than which city you live in. A house in the city of Houston could be zoned to Houston ISD, Spring Branch ISD, Cypress-Fairbanks, Alief, or several others depending on the neighborhood. Families moving to the area typically start by narrowing down to a district, then look at individual campuses.

The highest-performing large district in Harris County is Tomball ISD, which averages 65.6% combined proficiency across its 17 campuses. The Spring Branch ISD corridor along Memorial Drive is a popular choice for families wanting to be inside the 610 Loop — schools like Wilchester Elementary (76.3% combined), Rummel Creek Elementary (74.3%), and Frostwood Elementary (70.6%) consistently rank among the top elementaries in Harris County. Klein ISD and Cypress-Fairbanks ISD offer strong options to the northwest.

Understanding STAAR Scores

Texas schools are assessed using the STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) program. The scores shown here represent the percentage of students who meet or exceed the "Meets Grade Level" standard in ELA and Math. STAAR is specific to Texas, so these scores should only be compared with other Texas schools — not schools in other states that use different tests.
