A distance between two postal codes is a distance between two centroids, not two addresses - and Canadian postal codes vary enormously in how much ground they cover, from a single downtown building to many kilometres of rural road. This tool states that honestly: a straight-line distance, with the real range the address data behind each code actually supports, not a confident-looking decimal it can't back up. It is never a road distance - actual driving distance will be longer, typically by a fifth to a third.

That same build also measures how far each code's real addresses spread from that centroid - the number this tool's honest range is built from, not a rule of thumb.

Before you read a number: what this distance can and can't tell you

  • The figure is between two postal code centroids, not two addresses. If both codes have an address spread under 10 metres, every address on record for each shares one location, and the distance is exact. Otherwise, the true distance between two specific addresses could reasonably be different from the centroid figure, up to each code's own measured spread.
  • The range shown is the outer bound, not the likely answer. It assumes both addresses sit at the far edge of their own code's spread, in exactly opposing directions - a rare configuration. Most real address pairs land much closer to the centre figure than to either edge of the range.
  • Rural postal codes (second character zero) typically have a far larger address spread than urban ones - sometimes many kilometres - so a pair involving one will carry a correspondingly wider range. That reflects the real size of the postal code, not a weaker calculation.
  • This is a straight-line distance. Actual road distance is always longer, typically by a fifth to a third depending on the roads and terrain in between - never treat this figure as a driving distance or a drive-time estimate.
  • A small number of postal codes have address records too scattered to place with a reliable centroid. Rather than guess, this tool refuses to give a distance for those and says why.
