Distance Between Two Places in Canada
Enter any two Canadian places, addresses, or postal codes and get the straight-line distance between them. Every result says plainly how precisely it was found - an exact address is not the same claim as a city name - so you know what the distance figure actually rests on.
Working out how far apart two Canadian places are, as the crow flies? This tool takes any place name, street address, or postal code on each side and returns the straight-line distance between them, drawn on the map, with a plain statement of how precisely each side was actually located.
What this tool sends, and to whom
- A Canadian postal code you enter is looked up in this site's own data (the same data Distance Between Postal Codes uses) and never reaches a third party.
- Anything else you type - a place name, landmark, or address - is sent, exactly as typed, to nominatim.openstreetmap.org, OpenStreetMap's own free public search service, to be turned into a location. This only happens when you press Calculate: there is no live-suggestions dropdown here, so nothing is sent per keystroke as you type.
- The Copy Link button stores the resolved coordinates and a short place label, not the text you typed. Google Analytics records the full page URL on every page of this site (see the privacy page), so a shared link's coordinates and label are what analytics sees for this page, not your original search.
Reading the precision on each result
- Exact address - a specific building or house number was matched.
- Somewhere on this street - a road was matched, without a specific number on it.
- Approximate postal area - a Canadian postal code was matched to its centroid, the average position of the real addresses on record for it.
- Approximate - place name only - a town, city, or named place was matched, not a specific address. The distance is measured from that place's centre point, which can be several kilometres from an address at its edge for a large city.
- Approximate - broad area only - the match was broader still (a region or county-level result).
If more than one distinct Canadian place shares the name you entered, this tool asks you to pick which one was meant rather than silently guessing.
How It Works
- Enter two places - a name, address, or postal code on each side
- Calculate - each side is resolved and shown with how precisely it was found
- Read the result - straight-line distance in kilometres and miles, plus bearing
- Share - Copy Link stores the resolved locations, not your search text
Frequently Asked Questions
What does this tool send to OpenStreetMap, and when?
If what you type is a Canadian postal code, it is looked up in this site's own data and never leaves it for a third party. Anything else you type is sent, as you typed it, to nominatim.openstreetmap.org, OpenStreetMap's own free public search service, so it can be turned into a location. That request only happens when you press Calculate, not as you type - this tool has no live-suggestions dropdown, so nothing is sent per keystroke.
What does a shared link store?
The Copy Link button stores the coordinates this tool resolved, a short place label, and how precisely each side was found - not the text you originally typed. Google Analytics records the full page URL on every page of this site, so for a shared link, GA4 sees the resolved coordinates and label, not your search text.
What does "Approximate - place name only" mean?
It means the result is a town, city, or named place, not a specific address or street. Distances involving a result at this precision are between the centre of that place and the other point, which can be off by however wide the place itself is - a large city's centre point could be several kilometres from an address at its edge.
Why did it ask me to choose between several results?
Canada has genuine duplicate place names - more than one Windsor, more than one Springfield, and so on. Rather than silently pick OpenStreetMap's top-ranked guess, this tool checks whether two or more distinct, comparably-ranked places match what was typed and asks which one was meant. This is a heuristic, not a guarantee every real ambiguity is caught.
Why does this exist separately from Distance Between Postal Codes?
Distance Between Postal Codes measures between two postal code centroids and states an honest worst-case range built from how far real addresses in each code actually spread from that centroid. This tool resolves any place, address, or postal code to a single point and states how precisely that point was found, but does not compute a combined uncertainty range the way the postal-code tool does.
Why will the actual road distance be longer?
This tool measures straight-line ("as the crow flies") distance only - there is no routing engine behind it. Roads bend around terrain, water, and property lines, so a real driving route is essentially always longer than the straight line between two points. Treat the figure here as a lower bound for planning, not a driving-time estimate.
