What is a section, township and range, and does this tool use it?
Section-township-range is the Dominion Land Survey system used to describe land in the Prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba) - a standard section is one square mile, 640 acres, and a quarter section is 160 acres. This tool doesn't read or convert DLS descriptions; it measures the actual shape you draw on the map, in hectares or acres, which you can compare against a known DLS parcel size. Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada use different systems (metes-and-bounds or concession lots), so DLS doesn't apply nationally.
How big is 100 acres (or any other size) on a map?
Draw a shape near the location you're comparing against and check the area shown in the sidebar - adjust the shape until it matches the size you're picturing (100 acres, 5 hectares, and so on), and you'll see exactly how much ground that covers at that spot.
