Why check light pollution before you go

Most Canadians live under bright southern-border city skies. Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary all sit at Bortle 7 to 9, where only the Moon, planets and a handful of stars survive the glow. But Canada is also one of the best places on Earth to see the night sky: drive a few hours from almost any major city and you can reach Bortle 1 and 2 skies, dark enough that the Milky Way's core casts a visible shadow - and much of the north sits there year-round.

Canada holds two real, distinct kinds of dark-sky recognition. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada runs its own national program - Dark-Sky Preserves, Nocturnal Preserves, and Urban Star Parks - with 28 sites designated since Torrance Barrens became the first anywhere in Canada in 1999. Separately, DarkSky International certifies places to its own global standard; Mont-Megantic became the world's first International Dark Sky Reserve in 2007. A handful of sites, like Au Diable Vert in Quebec, hold both. Most Canadians assume Jasper and Wood Buffalo are internationally certified because of how often they're described that way - they aren't. Both are genuine, real RASC designations, just not the same thing.

How to use this light pollution map

Click "Use My Location", or click any point on the map, and the nearest dark sky sites appear in the results panel, ranked by distance. Filter by certification (RASC-designated, DarkSky International, or uncertified) and by site type (national park, provincial park, observatory, and so on) to narrow the list to what you're actually looking for. Toggle the VIIRS light pollution overlay to see how the glow spreads around cities and where it fades, and use the opacity slider to compare the overlay against the terrain beneath it. Before you commit to a trip, check the moon phase panel: a bright moon washes out faint skies as thoroughly as a town does, and the panel shows the next new moon so you can pick the darkest weekend.

What is the Bortle scale?

It rates night-sky darkness from 1 to 9. Class 1 is a pristine dark sky where the Milky Way casts shadows; class 9 sits at the opposite extreme, so bright that only the Moon, a few planets and the very brightest stars break through. Most Canadian downtown cores sit around class 7 to 9, while much of rural and northern Canada is class 1 to 3. This page's overlay shows relative light pollution visually - it does not calculate a specific Bortle number for a single clicked point.

What is the difference between an RASC-designated site and an internationally certified one?

They are two different, real certifying bodies. The Royal Astronomical Society of Canada (RASC) runs its own Dark-Sky Preserve, Nocturnal Preserve, and Urban Star Park program - a Canadian designation, older in some cases than DarkSky International's own certification (Torrance Barrens, Ontario, was RASC's first, in 1999). DarkSky International is the separate global body behind International Dark Sky Parks, Reserves, and similar certifications. A site can hold either, both, or neither - use the certification filters on this page to see which is which, since most sites hold only one.

Is Jasper, Wood Buffalo, or Grasslands an official international dark sky site?

No, despite frequent claims otherwise. All three are RASC Dark-Sky Preserves - real, genuine designations - but none holds DarkSky International certification, confirmed directly against RASC's own published list. Wood Buffalo is regularly called the "world's largest dark sky preserve" (true, under RASC's designation) in ways that imply international certification it doesn't hold. Banff National Park goes further: tourism copy routinely claims it was "RASC-designated since 2017", but Banff does not appear on RASC's own list at all - it holds no formal dark-sky certification of any kind. Jasper's own 2011 RASC designation is Alberta's real one.

What is a section, township and range, and does this tool use it?

Section-township-range is the Dominion Land Survey system used to describe land in the Prairie provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba) - a standard section is one square mile, 640 acres. This tool doesn't read DLS descriptions; it plots real dark sky sites by coordinate. Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic Canada, and the territories use different land-description systems, so DLS doesn't apply nationally.

Where are the darkest skies in Canada?

The darkest measured and reported skies are in the territories and the most remote parts of the provinces: Nunavut and the Northwest Territories away from Yellowknife, Labrador's interior, and the Prairie grasslands (Grasslands National Park, the Great Sand Hills) sit among the lowest measured light pollution in the country. Wood Buffalo National Park's core reads about 21.65 mag/arcsecยฒ on RASC's own measurements, among the darkest anywhere this page lists.

What's the best time of year to see the Milky Way in Canada?

Roughly June to August, when the bright galactic core sits low in the southern sky after dark. Aim for the week either side of a new moon; the moon phase panel on this page shows the next one.

Can I see the aurora borealis in Canada?

Yes, and Canada is one of the best places on Earth for it. Yellowknife sits directly beneath the auroral oval and reports aurora on up to roughly 240 nights a year. The territories generally, northern parts of every province, and dedicated viewing operators near Yellowknife (see the map) give the strongest, most reliable displays - but real aurora activity reaches much further south during major geomagnetic storms.

How accurate is the light pollution overlay?

The overlay is built from NASA/NOAA VIIRS satellite measurements of upward-radiating light. It's a reliable guide to sky quality over areas of a few hundred metres, but it can't capture very local sources, and atmospheric conditions - humidity, and wildfire smoke in particular during Canadian summers - change what you'll actually see on a given night.
