Public Restrooms on the National Mall
23 restroom places within a mile of the Washington Monument, from the Lincoln Memorial to the museums. 9 wheelchair accessible, 3 with baby changing. Plus where the National Park Service puts its own.
Two halves of the Mall, two kinds of restroom
The National Mall is two miles long and almost everyone walks it. The eastern half, from the Washington Monument to the Capitol, is lined with the Smithsonian museums; the western half, from the Monument to the Lincoln Memorial, is the memorials and the Reflecting Pool. The map above opens on a 1 mile radius from the Washington Monument, which reaches the Lincoln Memorial one way and the National Air and Space Museum the other: 23 restroom places (a facility mapped as several points counts once), 10 recorded as open to the public and 2 as customers only. None has hours in the data.
Where the National Park Service's restrooms are
The National Park Service, which runs the Mall, lists its restrooms in one sentence: "Restrooms are available at the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, King Memorial, FDR Memorial, WWII Memorial, Constitution Gardens and at the Washington Monument Lodge." Every one of those is at the Washington Monument or west of it. Its page for the Reflecting Pool South restroom adds that the "nearest adjacent restroom opportunities are at the Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial, or Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial". The park itself "is open 24 hours a day"; the pages we read give no restroom hours.
Our data names one NPS facility, the Sylvan Theatre Comfort Station on the Washington Monument grounds, recorded as open to the public and wheelchair accessible. It also has unnamed restroom records beside the World War II Memorial, in Constitution Gardens and at the Lincoln Memorial, where NPS says its restrooms are; the records carry no names, so the list below shows them at those positions as recorded.

The museum half: restrooms inside the museums
Between the Monument and the Capitol, the restrooms our data records are inside the museums and a few cafés around them; the Smithsonian Castle is about half a mile east of the Monument. An unnamed record at the National Museum of Asian Art is tagged as public, free, wheelchair accessible, gender neutral and with baby changing. A museum restroom is only available while the museum is open, and we could not read the Smithsonian's visitor pages when this page was checked (si.edu refused the request), so we give no museum hours; check si.edu before counting on one late in the day.
Not checked: whether any museum admits visitors to use a restroom without going through security, and the hours of the Smithsonian museums. Both left out rather than guessed.
Accessible restrooms and baby changing
Within a mile of the Monument our data records 9 wheelchair accessible restrooms and 3 with a baby changing table. The museum restrooms are mostly tagged; several of the memorial-side records are not.
Every restroom on the map, nearest first
23 places within 1 mile of the Washington Monument, from 29 map points (a facility mapped as several points, such as a men's and a women's room, is one place). Distances are straight-line from the center of the area. Each row shows only what OpenStreetMap records for it, after cleaning: a row without hours or access details means the record has none we could show, not that the restroom is closed or locked. OpenStreetMap data from October 2026.
"Open now" and "Closed now" appear only where OpenStreetMap lists a restroom's opening hours: 0 places here, and 1.7% of the US restroom records we use. Those hours are added by volunteers and may be out of date, and "Hours not listed" means only that no hours are recorded.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where are the public restrooms on the National Mall?
The National Park Service says: "Restrooms are available at the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, King Memorial, FDR Memorial, WWII Memorial, Constitution Gardens and at the Washington Monument Lodge." All of those are at the Washington Monument or west of it, within the mile this page covers. Along the museum half, between the Monument and the Capitol, the restrooms our data records are inside the museums and a few cafés.
Are the National Mall restrooms open 24 hours?
The National Park Service says "National Mall and Memorial Parks is open 24 hours a day", but it does not publish restroom hours on the pages we read, and our data has no hours for any restroom in this area. We cannot say which, if any, are open overnight.
Can I use the restrooms in the Smithsonian museums?
Our data records restrooms in the Smithsonian museums along the Mall, including an unnamed record at the National Museum of Asian Art, recorded as public, free, wheelchair accessible and with baby changing. Museum restrooms are only available while the museum is open. The Smithsonian's visitor pages could not be read when this page was checked, so we do not state museum hours; see si.edu.
Which National Mall restrooms are wheelchair accessible?
Our data records 9 wheelchair accessible restrooms within a mile of the Washington Monument and 3 with baby changing, including the Sylvan Theatre Comfort Station on the Washington Monument grounds, run by the National Park Service.
