How the Route Optimiser Works

Under the bonnet, the tool builds an initial route with a nearest-neighbour pass, then refines it further with 2-opt swaps - the same pairing of techniques commonly used to approximate the Travelling Salesman Problem. The whole calculation finishes in well under a second, even for a full 100-stop list.

Every distance in that calculation is a straight line between postcode centre points, not a road-network distance. That's a deliberate trade-off: it's more than accurate enough to get the stop order right, even though your actual driving distance on the day will run a bit longer than the number shown.

Do you store my postcodes?

No. Everything is calculated locally in your browser and nothing is logged on our end. Sharing a route just packages the postcodes into the link itself, so there's nothing sitting on a server anywhere.

Can I use full street addresses, not just postcodes?

Yes, in two places. Your start and end points accept a street address once you've entered a postcode, just start typing the street name and pick from the list. For your stops, upload a CSV with an address column and the tool will resolve each stop to its precise location instead of the postcode centre, which makes a real difference when several stops share the same postcode. The paste box still accepts plain postcodes if that's quicker for a short list.

How precise is the distance figure?

It's a straight-line measurement between postcode centre points, not a road distance. That's the right tool for getting the visiting order right; for the actual kilometres you'll drive, expect a somewhat higher number once you're on the road.

Can I use this for turn-by-turn navigation?

The tool itself only works out the order - for actual turn-by-turn directions, open the result in Google Maps. Google Maps caps a single trip at 10 stops, so a longer round needs splitting into batches there.
